Names Go Far

What is your name?

Most names (but not every single one) have meanings behind them. Different names have diverse meanings, background, and origins that make the name unique… even powerful.

When creating characters, I aim for such things for various reasons. One of them is most likely for persona… which is the most common of things. For example, I create a character that is a hunter or a warrior, someone strong or pretty, and as of late for me… names of the elemental kind. Villain names have to at least sound ‘bad news’ unless I am going for a completely off beat name just to screw heads for entertainment sake. It works a few wonders if not make a few brows quirk… but that is mainly in the Multiverse Project.

Name generating is one of my knacks. I can create a name quick given resource, and even then I break up names and build them with pieces of other names broken up for something completely new and unheard. I try to do that to stray as far away as possible from the mainstream names too cliché and overused, for I really don’t want to be like everyone else. I run through many sites that are extremely helpful to me in developing a name foundation, and from there as explained, I break them apart, sometimes add an extra letter, take away, or combine two names depending on how many letters are used. It is a bit confusing when I try to get deeper into it… or maybe I just explained it simple enough… but name making is fun, and that goes for places and things too… not just characters.

The key for me is to make each name as related to said piece as possible. They must complete the world from head to toe, feel real to the surroundings and then some. To me, I have this way of knowing the name will do, and I just go with it. Sometimes I get that bland feeling and break it back down only to rebuild again… and presto!

Some names, as a tribute to those who know, are easy to figure out... but one must know me to even know which name is designed after an individual I deem special to me. Let it be friends and/or family on that note.

A bit of knowing there, Shadow of course is based off my old and still running nickname by some, Slicka is based off the nickname 'Slick Rick', and Ricven... well that's pretty easy right there. Between Shadow and Slicka, those two have deeper meanings. Shadow is self explanatory on the surface, but there is a deeper symbolization given his history and abilities (not to spoil)... as well as his own philosophy on things, even his own knowing of name and why it was giving to him (really refraining from spoiling here). As for Slicka, the term 'Slick' is another word for 'Shiny', like his golden hair and eyes. The word 'Smooth' comes in as told by parts of his personality. Clever... smart... quick... sophisticated behind his humor and very adept in his skills also support the 'Slick' work and the Slicka name I created.

The Ricven name came out of nowhere, and I have been rolling with it perfectly ever since.

For those needing a bit of help on these things, here are some neat sites of good use:

Speaking of Slicka and Ricven, about time I touch on those two knuckle heads and their origins.
